Direct answer: A field-tested Google Business Profile checklist for 2026 — categories, services, review velocity, posts, Q&A and the ranking signals that move the map pack.

Why the map pack is now the homepage

For 62% of local searches, the Google Business Profile (GBP) card is the first — and often only — touchpoint a buyer sees. Your website matters less than what Google can render inline: name, category, hours, photos, reviews and questions. Treat GBP as your primary landing page for the local buyer, not an afterthought.

Get the primary category exactly right

Primary category is the single largest ranking lever in the map pack. Use the GMB Everywhere or PlePer extensions to see the primary categories of the top three competitors in your city, then match the intent — not the label. 'Interior designer' and 'Interior design studio' rank for different queries. Add up to nine relevant secondary categories, no fluff.

Services, service areas and the '25 attributes' rule

Add every service you actually sell (not aspirational ones) with a 200-word description each — Google indexes these as keyword surfaces. Set your service area to city + surrounding pin codes, not the whole state; over-broad areas dilute relevance. Fill in at least 25 attributes (women-owned, wheelchair accessible, appointment required, online estimates, etc.) — profiles with 25+ attributes convert 30% better on average.

Review velocity beats review count

Twenty new reviews in 90 days outrank 200 reviews from three years ago. Build a review SOP: request within 24 hours of service completion, use a short-link QR on the invoice, and reply to every review within 48 hours with the customer's first name and the service they bought (Google reads reply text). Never gate reviews — Google detects filtered funnels and suppresses them.

Weekly Posts, Products and the Q&A trap

Publish one GBP Post every 7 days — offers, events, or updates. Add every service as a Product with an image and price band. Seed 8–12 Questions yourself from a personal Gmail and answer them from the business profile — this owns the People Also Ask real estate before a competitor plants a hostile question.

Photos, geo-tagged and shot monthly

Upload 10 fresh photos per month — exterior, interior, team, product-in-use, before/after. Geotag them with your business address using ExifTool or the free GeoImgr tool. Profiles that add photos monthly get 42% more direction requests than static profiles.

Suppression audit, spam reports and the finishing move

Once a quarter, run a suppression audit: search your primary keyword + city in an incognito window from your actual address. If you rank lower than a competitor stuffing keywords in their business name ('Best Cheap Fastest Plumber Mumbai'), file a Business Redressal form — Google acts on well-documented reports within 14 days. This one move often lifts small businesses two positions in the map pack overnight.

“Local SEO in 2026 is 60% Google Business Profile hygiene and 40% everything else. Owners who treat GBP as a weekly discipline compound leads their competitors will never catch.”
